Note: Most of my activities focus on autism, but please be aware that this training is not about neurodiversity and is not related to autism.


Decades of research have shown that a sense of control, including the ability to make choices, is a deep, biologically based human need. Perceived control is crucial for mental health, and it underlies intrinsic motivation, which is also critical for healthy development and emotional well-being throughout the lifespan. In this webinar, Dr. Stixrud will present theory and research on the importance of a sense of control in emotional and motivational development. The primary focus of the presentation, however, will be ways in which parents and clinicians can, through their work with youth and schools, help their children/clients experience a stronger sense of autonomy or agency, as well as greater confidence in their ability to manage life’s challenges.
